Tamiya P-38 F/G Lightning

1:48 Scale Model

Tamiya P-38F/G Top View

The Tamiya P-38 F/G Lightning is an exceptional kit. A 1:48 scale model that has two variants that can be built, the F or G. Parts and paint scheme diagrams, plus decals are included.

The model comes molded in grey plastic, with recessed panel lines. Three ball bearings are included, one in the nose, and one for each boom, to keep the model level without a clear piece in the tail. The rear ladder can be deployed or stowed, as well the canopy can be open or closed.

The variations are an F (B version) or G (A version) of the airplane. The differences are noticeable on the instrument panels, outer fuel tanks, panels for the nose, landing lights on the underside, updated turbochargers, rear wheel hubs, open and closed canopies, and the gunsight.

There are two paint schemes and decal variations. Included are decals for the top canopy mirror and two side panels to mimic polished aluminum for deployed landing gear verification. The instructions are detailed and one needs to pay attention to the labels for either the A or B version of the kit, plus the color fold out for the paint scheme.

The details of the kit are impeccable. The wheel well details and plumbing, plus landing gear attachment is superb compared to other kits. The doors have a large tab that slides into the wheel bay and makes it appear seamless. Tabs are marked so there is no confusion as to where each goes during assembly. The decals were easy to apply with no issues. Microsol helped with the application. Using thin cement helped hide all seams as they panels were made to align as with the seams. I had no issues with getting the booms to align to the body. This was done with extenders in the design. I put the pilot in so I did not have to use the seat belt decals which looked a bit odd. I used tamiya paints for the color and the color mix ratios in the instructions looked very spot on.

This is a great kit for any builder. Beginners need to be careful of the more delicate parts and using a pin vise to drill out the proper holes for the extra fuel tanks. I highly recommend this kit and you get your moneys worth.
